Artist Biography
My name is Neal Kleman. Originally from Arlington, MA we moved around quite a bit before finally settling in Hamden CT. After graduating from Hamden High School, I attended Abilene Christian University, earning a BFA in 1982 with a major in Studio Art and a Minor in Education. I then began a teaching career in Sudan, TX, that would span 35 years. It was while teaching that I met and married my husband of over 30 years and had 2 boys.
Now that we are empty nesters, I have the time to concentrate on my art, better my craft, and explore new avenues. I am excited to see where this new journey will lead!
Artist Statement
Drawing always came naturally as a child, and I found it quite relaxing, still do. My preferred drawing medium is graphite; however, I love to explore new materials and how they may be used in combination with the traditional. In the last few years, I have begun to branch out into painting and mixed media, enjoying the layering of color and texture as well as the contrast of opaque against transparent.
People, all ages, shapes and sizes are my favorite subject matter. Rather than posed compositions, I try to capture them in natural surroundings, especially the quiet times in life. My chief goal is to communicate to the viewer whatever emotion the subject may be experiencing at the time, be it introspection, sadness, happiness, etcetera. The design elements of value and space are key features in my compositions and are employed to best help convey these feelings.
